Optical Brighteners for PE, PVC,and engineering polymers

In the plastics industry, an aesthetic and high-quality appearance is just as critical as mechanical strength. During polymer manufacturing or recycling processes, plastics naturally develop a yellowish tint over time when exposed to heat, light, and UV radiation.

Optical Brighteners (OB and OB-1) are specialized fluorescent additives used to mask this yellowish discoloration, maximizing whiteness and brightness.

These additives absorb invisible ultraviolet (UV) light and re-emit it in the visible blue light spectrum. This blue light neutralizes the polymer's natural yellowness, creating an optical illusion that causes the human eye to perceive the product as significantly brighter, more vibrant, and pure white.

Optical brighteners are the "hidden heroes" of the plastics sector. Working like magic even at incredibly low dosing rates, these specialized additives absorb invisible UV rays to ensure your products look much more brilliant, vivid, and pristine white.

Key Advantages:

Virgin-Like Brilliance for Recycled Plastics: They completely mask the dirty, gray, and yellowish appearance inherent to recycled plastics, giving your reclaimed raw materials the premium visual appeal of virgin resins.

Flawless Whiteness and Clarity: While helping you achieve that highly sought-after "snow-white" tone in opaque plastics, they eliminate haziness in transparent products, bringing them to crystal-clear clarity.

Cost Optimization: By enhancing overall brightness, they reduce your dependence on high loadings of white pigments (Titanium Dioxide), effectively lowering your formulation and production costs.

Rutil Titanium

Dioxide

Rutil Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most fundamental raw materials in the plastics industry, single-handedly meeting the sector's demand for white pigment. Although it exists in nature in two primary crystalline structuresAnatase and Rutile it is definitively the Rutile form that dominates the plastics market.

Due to its high refractive index (2.73), Rutile-type TiO2 refracts light extraordinarily well, imparting excellent opacity and superior whiteness to the plastic.

What Does Rutile Titanium Dioxide Do in Plastics?

Superior Opacity and Snow-Whiteness: It completely blocks light and images from passing through the plastic, ensuring full opacity. Even at very low loading rates, it imparts a flawless "snow-white" tone to the polymer matrix.

UV Protection and Weathering Resistance: Rutile TiO2 strongly absorbs and scatters harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. This prevents the breaking of polymer chains, thereby stopping the plastic from yellowing, becoming brittle, or cracking under sunlight. It acts effectively as a sunscreen for plastics.

Color Stabilization and Brilliance: It enhances the vibrancy of other colored pigments used alongside it. Furthermore, it works synergistically with optical brighteners to maximize the product’s brightness and commercial appeal.

Thanks to its ease of processing, high-temperature stability (withstanding extrusion processes above 300°C), and exceptional hiding power, Rutile TiO2 is utilized across every segment of the plastics industry.

Where is it Used in the Plastics Industry?

1. White Masterbatch Production

It is operationally difficult for plastic processors (injection molders, film extruders, etc.) to use raw powder pigments directly. Therefore, Rutile TiO2 is compounded at high concentrations (ranging from 40% to 80%) with polymer carriers (PE, PP, PS) to produce White Masterbatch. This represents the largest consumption segment in the entire industry.

2. PVC Profiles, Pipes, and Siding (Windows & Facades)

PVC window profiles, panels, and pipes designed for outdoor applications are constantly exposed to sunlight and harsh weather conditions. Rutile TiO2 ensures these products retain their bright white appearance for years while preventing mechanical degradation caused by UV-induced aging.

3. Packaging Films and Bags (PE / PP)

It is widely used in the production of milk pouches, food packaging, mailing/courier bags, and all types of white plastic films. The high hiding power of the rutile form is essential to shield packaged food from light degradation (e.g., preventing milk from spoiling).

4. Engineering Plastics and Automotive Parts

It is integrated into formulations for home appliance housings, electronic device panels (ABS, PC, PS), and automotive interior/exterior trim parts to deliver both aesthetic smoothness and high resistance to heat and impact.

5. The Recycling Sector

It serves as a critical savior in the recycling industry. By completely masking the mixed, dirty, and dark base appearance of recycled plastics (rPP, rPE), it restores the reclaimed material back to the clean look of premium, virgin white raw materials.
